With great weather and desire for healthy living and delicious food, there are over 100 community gardens in Charlotte with more emerging everyday. Friendship Gardens, Sow Much Good and the Field to Fork Program are three organizations leading this charge: The Field to Fork Program is a partnership between Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Mecklenburg Country Health Department, Charlotte Green, and Fuel Pizza where elementary students learn about gardening, nutrition, and healthy cooking by growing vegetables that they cook on homemade vegetable pizzas. Sow Much Good brings access, awareness, education and tools for local sustainable food sources to low income, underserved populations to create healthier people and communities. Through a network of gardens across Mecklenburg County, Friendship Gardens Charlotte creates community around local food traditions, growing healthy food, making it available to all — especially those with limited access — and sharing knowledge and passion for sustainable food production. Located between China and India, Kathmandu is a metropolis in the heart of the kingdom of Nepal, a land of snow-white mountains and home of the gods. It was only a few decades ago that ancient Nepal opened its borders. Until then, due to the command of the ruling Gurkha Dynasty, the ‘Home of the Divine’, was totally isolated. In the heart of the city is Durbar Square, in which the country’s royalty resided until 1908 and also where the region’s most important festivals take place. The Shiva-Parvati Temple dates back to the early years of the Shah Dynasty and its five sectioned, portal-like frame contains inscriptions that are thought to be the oldest in the Nepalese language. The large Jagannath Temple is dedicated to the god, Krishna, and to fend off the prudish Goddess of Lightning, sexual images adorn the edge of the roof. Built above an impressive array of steps, the mighty Taleju Temple overshadows each of the other temples. The architecture of this ‘mountain temple’ emphasises the unique importance of the goddess Shiva. Kumari Ghar is the residence of the living goddess Kumari. For this role, a young girl is duly selected and is disallowed from leaving the palace until puberty, her task being to affirm the king his power. The customs of the people in this ‘Kingdom on the Roof of the World’ may seem strange to those from beyond its borders but this land of both jungle and everlasting snow, has developed according to its own rich traditions and beliefs.

The enchanting medieval city of Auray is situated on a bend of the Riviere d’Auray that flows into the Golfe du Morbihan. The city has earned its place in the history books of Brittany. www.euronews.net Angeliki Mihou has decided to take her future into her own hands. Last year, this Greek mother of two returned to her parents’ village to start a new venture… snail farming. Unable to find a job in Athens or in the city where her husband works, Angeliki now lives in a small town some 100 kilometres from the capital. She is hoping that raising and selling about three thousand kilos of snails per year will lead to a better life for her and her family. The farm however, is not without its risks. After investing her life savings, about 17 thousand euros into this new business, Angelika tells euronews about the uncertainty she faces: “I didn’t borrow any money and even if I had wanted to, the banks wouldn’t have given me any. It’s all my money. All my savings. So I hope this works and I’m doing all I can to make sure it does.” Angeliki is one of the 60 thousand Greeks who has gone into farming over the past two years. She is also part of a new Greek exodus – a young generation which instead of going abroad, is going back to its roots, its rural villages, its home and especially its family. Angeliki Mihou explains her new farm would never have been possible, were it not for the backing of her father: “I needed some land and I would never have been able to do this without this land which belongs to my father.
