He finally meets his long-lost family

Rating: 5
Using the Internet and genealogy tips, Wally Ely of Scituate has been reunited with a 94-year-old aunt he’d never met and lots of cousins in Michigan. Wally Ely’s discovery started with two faded letters in his late father’s dresser drawer. But the real kicker was a surprise phone call years later. “I think I’m related to you,” a young man said nervously. Ely recalls being “in shock, elated” after the call. It was from a cousin, and the excitement grew as more details emerged and long-lost relatives came together. The reunion was possible because of a combination of luck, persistence, the Internet, genealogy amateurs who shared their tips and helpful librarians and town officials in several states. The trail of discovery began in 1987, when Ely, a Scituate resident, and his wife, Florence, were closing up the house of his late father, who had died at age 76. In a back drawer, they found letters written in the 1930s that held long-sought clues to relatives. Seventeen years later, in 2004, at age 67, Ely finally met his 90-year-old Aunt Mabel, “a sharp and funny woman,” for the first time. In minutes, they were talking like old friends. Come fall, the Elys will travel to East Lansing, Mich., for their fifth reunion with Mabel Steinbacker, 94, and her family. Steinbacker is the only sister Ely’s father, Dan, had. There were five children in the family, but after their mother died in 1917 at age 35, their father, Jesse, split the family up. He took Dan and his older brother

New Orleans: We visit locations from HBO series Treme

Rating: 4
Really the only proper pop pilgrimage for Treme would be to move there. Creators David Simon and Eric Overmeyer seem intent on showcasing every corner of the Crescent City, from its most famous restaurants to the tiniest venue where anyone could play a trumpet before an appreciative crowd. For this installment we decided to visit the neighborhood that lent its name to the show: Treme. As Dave Walker points out above, the name Treme only seems like a misnomer, given that only a portion of the series takes place in that neighborhood. Because so much New Orleans music has its roots in Tremé, and because so much of the city’s identity is tied to the music, it’s as apt a title as anyone could dream up.Walker joined us for a walking tour of the neighborhood starting at St. Augustine’s church, a place with a long, interesting history. It was founded in 1841 by free people of color, making it the oldest primarily black Catholic church in America. Its founders insured it would be welcoming to slaves by purchasing pews for them, a move that upset white parishioners. One of its most famous congregants, Homer Plessy, would go on to play a major role in the history of civil rights as part of the Plessy Vs. Ferguson Supreme Court decision. (He’s buried in the nearby St. Louis Cemetery #1, subject of another Pop Pilgrims installment.) Others include jazz giant Sidney Bechet and Tootie Montana, a famous Mardi Gras Indian Chief.More recently, it’s served as a symbol of neighborhood

Fire Emblem 4 Chapter 1 Part 1/10

Rating: 4
Skipping all that story stuff as usual, used the arena with almost every1 and didn’t think I should record that since it gets boring. Most of my units couldn’t get past Shark the mercenary. I used Alec to lure Aira because the Awareness skill he has (known as Nihil in Radiant Dawn and PoR) negates Aira’s Meteor/Shooting star sword.

CORITHA – SIERRA MADRE

Rating: 4
www.pinoyclassicfolkrock.blogspot.com DID YOU KNOW (INFO FROM HER WEBSITE) That Coritha was the first musical artist in the history of popular Pinoy music to experiment with Philippine native instruments in her music? Rondalla instruments such as the Banduria, Octavina and Laud were used in the songs “Awit Kay Leandro,” “Bilanggo” and her biggest hit song “Oras Na.” Although the singer-songwriter felt her experimentations were not as successful as she had wanted them to be due perhaps to the novel idea of trying to merge native instruments with standard western instruments, something unheard of during the resurgence of original Pilipino music, Coritha’s pioneering efforts have enriched Pinoy music and kept Pinoy culture alive in the hearts and minds of many Filipinos. – That Coritha was the first musical performer and recording artist to work with blind musicians utilizing their talents as banduria players for her live performances and recordings during the early part of her career? Ruben Mueco, Ramon Valentero and Catalino Lazo were three of the blind musicians who contributed their unique talents to Coritha’s musical endeavors. -that Coritha wrote and sung her mega hit song entitled “Sierra Madre” as her tribute to the Sierra Madre Mountains, the largest and longest mountain range in the Philippines? Aware of its geographical, historical and environmental significance, Coritha wanted the mountains immortalized in song in order to remind Filipinos of its great history

Review of Legacy 7 (The Free Version)

Rating: 4
Hi everyone! The other night I just couldn’t sleep. I decided to go online and I read a million articles on genealogy. I really noticed how everyone was raving about how great Legacy 7 was. So, after checking it out some more I downloaded the free version. Honestly – there are so many great features just in the free version. I was pleasantly suprised. For a free software – it is such a great resource. Between the to-do list to keep my scatterbrain organized, the wonderful notes sections, the color and ease of use, and the amazing help it gives when you record sources – Needless to say, I think I’ve found my new program. NOTE: The views expressed in this video are purely my own. I was not paid to talk about how great Legacy was. I am not trying to bash any other program. I am merely saying that it really seems to be a great program. Also – I wanted to let you guys know that I have a brand new blog out: It kind of goes along with these videos but it also includes information on my own genealogy. So please check it out at: elysesgenes.blogspot.com I decided to create this blog because of a suggestion that the wonderful Robert Ragan told me about. If you haven’t heard of Mr. Reagan or his amazing genealogy site Treasure Maps yet, the I highly suggest you check out his website at http As always – I love your comments and ratings. Thanks everyone!
